The working environment for doctors in Japan remains extremely tough.
In Japan, as part of work-style reform, the maximum limit for overtime and holiday work hours for doctors has been set at 960 hours starting from April 2024. However, due to the decreasing working population and rapidly aging society, the current situation remains harsh.
Stereotypical gender roles are deeply rooted in Japan’s medical community as well. Male doctors often face long working hours, while female doctors find it difficult to continue their careers after childbirth. Japan has the fewest number of female doctors among OECD countries.
